Insurance precertification?!

Question: Has anyone ever heard of a hospital asking the patient to call their own insurance company for precertification for surgery and then for drugs? I've never heard of such a thing until a relative told me they were requested to do so today.

Yes. Precertification is mandatory by the insurance company or they may not cover the costs. Usually the hospital or physician does this for you. Depends on whether the surgery is necessary or elective, and how much time beforehand. Usually it can be done no later than 24 hours in advance.
