Most local authorities have a list of first aid courses held locally and many are free. It's a good thing to know the basics as you never know when you're gonna need them
ususally you would need a first aid kit, a certification in first aid, and it would be helpful to have more then one person so someone is there to call 911 for you.
Apart from the knowledge, You need to be able to listen and assess the situation you are in. You may need to easily be able to adapt to the circumstances. Above all it's all about confidence building with your casualty. If your are inexperienced and you do not know exactly what to do, you have to give the impression that you are totally in control.
