I have to wear splints at night in bed, due to RA. I was also given a back brace when the disc prolapsed, but told that I was only to wear the brace while I was moving from the wheelchair to my car, bed and so on. Braces immobilize the joints, so the muscles, ligaments do not have to work! However, the draw back, prolonged use just weakens the muscles, ligaments, so you first need to find out what is causing the problem and then fine the correct exercises to correct the problem. I saw a PT who gave me a few simple exercises, which did wonders for the back. The PT was so impressed, she recommended i sign up for a Pilate's Course, with another PT, so I did. It was one hour a week, mind you I collapsed into bed after the session. At the end of nine months they were going to put me in the advanced class and did not 'believe' I had RA and prolapsed disc. So I had to get my Medical File for them and shock horror! Unfortunately, insurance, I was not covered so had to leave, but I still do Pilate's at Home, just once a week. Best of Luck

Depending on your knee damage and limitations, an off the shelf that you get at a real Orthotic and Prosthetic company could work. Custom made knee braces are also available there and are usually covered by insurances.

The cheap one you purchase at the pharmacy: you would do better going to a hypnotist that will try to make you believe your knee doesn't hurt. They are a total waste of money.

Go see a doctor to identify the cause of the knee pain. It could be ligament laxity. Exercise will help with this if it's not too bad. Leg curls and leg extensions mostly also cycling either a real bike or a stationary one. If it's cartilage try a supplement with 1500 mg glucosamine, 1200mg chondroitin and MSM. In any case it will take 3-5 weeks to see improvement.
