I was kind of in the same situation a few years ago due to a car accident. I had a cervical spine injury and couldn't work, sleep, walk or do anything and I didn't have insurance. I had 2 surgeries that cost over $120,000. Here is how I got through it and I guess everything turned out as good as it could.

First, if you are in the U.S. contact your local county medical services office, (CMS). That's the first step to try to get you to the doctors and get your treatment started.

The CMS got me into a local clinic and they helped me get into a UCSD Medical Center clinic and begin getting evaluated and treated by their staff. I guess I was also considered indegent at that point but I got treatment like everyone else.

The other first step is to talk with your doctor. He is the one that will be able to tell you that you will have to stop working due to your condition and he is the one that will have to write the medical evaluation for social security. If he tells you that you will be disabled contact the social security office ASAP and at least get things rolling. This is also something your local county medical services will help you with.

Once I got into the UCSD system it was just a matter of a few months and I had the first operation and the day after that I got my first social security disability check.

Once I got to the point that they knew I needed to have an operation the CMS office helped me fill out paperwork and get Medi-Cal which is the California Medi-caid program. Once you are on that you are no longer considered indegent and you will be able to use it to cover any medical expenses and Rx's. I lived 30 miles from San Diego then and they even paid for my transportation back and forth in a cab while being treated by UCSD.

I guess it boils down to this:

Find and contact your local county medical services
They will be able to guide you through what program you will qualify for

Talk with your doctor about not being able to work and start the paperwork for SSD as soon as you can

You can contact the SSA at http://ssa.gov and get the paperwork and the process started. It is really best to do this as soon as your doctor tells you that you will be disabled for more that 6 months.

Check in your area for university medical schools or large medical centers that have programs for people without insurance.

Good luck. I know how unsettling it is to find yourself with a condition that changes your life but it is not nearly as bad if you take a proactive approuch to it and get things rolling as soon as you can.

That person is meaning to go in as a 'Charity Case' as a way to get your surgery paid for. Some Hospitals are considered 'charity hospitals' and will care for people who can't pay and then write off the expenses of the surgery and such.

Now here are some questions for you to consider...if your Doctor is all for you quitting your job, then will he sign off on Disability paperwork. To help you make sure you do in fact get the disability.

Is there any way you could just change jobs, for instance if you are at a job where you are sitting all day then would doing something else help. Are you in a profession like COmputer programming where sometimes they allow for telecommuting and would your work maybe consider that for you in your situation.

Do you have insurance at your current place of employment, if you have insurance then you might be able to contact them for information on how much the surgery will cost after insurance picks up their part.

Have you spoken with a Social Worker about the problem. First you need to know and understand how to be declared disabled in your state and what services would be out there for you if you do have to go that route. For instance, would you be eligible for just Medicare or Medicaid as well. There are social workers for the state and for the hospital.

Those are just a few things to think about while deciding.

I am sorry about your pain and hope you can be helped.
