Personally, I have never heard of having surgery for a broken thumb. Especially since it is in a splint (and not a cast), you will not need surgery. Surgery is also not normally necessary for a broken bone (the only "surgery" you would have needed is a screw for you thumb, but it sounds like you don't have that), and instead surgery is used mainly for repairing torn tendons/ligaments around an injury site (for example, if you sprain your ankle bad enough you may need surgery). Finally, there is no reason for you to expect surgery if your doctor has yet to mention it to you.

That would be a question for your orthopedist. If they just splinted it and told you to come back in x weeks, then I would say they probably don't anticipate surgery.
