I'm pregnant and slammed my thumb in the door 3/4/07 please help?!?!

Question: I'm about 3 months pregnant and slammed my thumb in the car door today (sounds dumb but I'm so upset at myself for doing something so silly).. My thumb instantly turned purple under the nail and swelled up 2x-3x its normal size. I put ice on it, didn't really do much. The throbbing pain is HORRIBLE.. I can't take it! I've been taking tylenol.. this happened at 12pm today and its 10pm and still hurting severly. I can't bend my thumb at all.. I'm not sure if it's because it's soo swollen! The pain is from the tip of my nail up until halfway down my thumb. It hurts even when I touch it or move. Actually it constantly hurts! I closed my finger in the door once before and I dont remember it hurting nearly half as bad! I'm wondering if I should go to ER or if it's just apart of a jammed bruised thumb! I don't want to sit in the ER waiting room for 4 hours for them to just look at it! It's not like I can even take anything else for the pain! Also I'm starting a new job 2marrow... Just great!!

it is possible that you have broken your finger, however, more like the pressure under your nail needs to be let out. which means an ER/ED visit to have an MD use a surgical soldering iron to pop 2 holes in the nail bed. that will relieve the pressure. it is EXTREMELY painful, however after 2-3 seconds of pain, the relief is considerable. go NOW.

sounds like you need an xray...cant they just put a whole bunch of those metal pads all over you to sheild your belly.?

Maybe you're not suppose to start that new job???

i would get it checked out by a doctor just incase other wise give it a couple days if it is still hurting as bad as it is today than go to a doctor an get it checked out

Sounds broken. For a thumb, they would just wrap it anyhow and let the fracture heal.
I would take ibuprofen, like 4 of them. Ibuprofen is OK between 8 and 32 weeks but it is strongly advised not to take it before 8 or ofter 32 weeks. Since you're at about 13 weeks it should be OK. Never take it after 32 weeks. Ibuprofen can hurt the babies heart.

go to the doctor. they can check and see if it is broken. they have safe ways to check pregnant women. be sure they know you are . If you have blood collecting under the nail on the finger this will cause great pain. they can relieve this also. don't continue to hurt get help. I know the kind of pain you are having I've been there. So go for help

I am totally accident prone so I know what you are talking about.

Honestly I'd go to the ER if it is hurting this bad. You don't want to be at your new job tomorrow & in tons of pain. That would keep you from doing a good job. Also if you get there tomorrow at your new job, you are in a lot of pain that gets so bad you have to leave your new job in order to see a doctor. Does this make sense?

Good luck! Don't feel bad I hurt my shoulder last week by tossing clothes up into a high shelf. lol

go to a doctor, ER is not necessary, but a doctor should check for a break or crushed bone, and any circulation problems. He will tell you what meds you can take for swelling and pain.

Have your Husband take a sharp pointed heavy type pen knife, and began turning the point of the knife at the purple(Blood Cluster) that you see in the nail. Keep turning the knife and it will bore slowly through the nail. Stop when blood starts to ooze out. It should be a pretty good thick flow, if not give a couple more turns with the knife. You won't go into the skin. Once the blood is out, the thumping will leave. Now apply ice to the swollen thumb. Should do it. Good luck and a speedy recovery.
