Trauma victims facial expressions in death...?!

Question: My sister's boyfriend was murdered on Thursday. Yesterday was his viewing. He did not look anything like himself. It was very obvious he was wearing lots of makeup to bring the color back to his face. However, something else I noticed was his facial expression. Unlike any I've seen before, he looked hurt, in pain, and just plain sad. He was the victim of a horrific stab wound to the center of the chest. The type of blow that shocks you and makes you wince in pain. It is also known that he did not die immediately, that for a few moments, the life literally drained from him. So his death, unfortunately, was painful. Is this what caused the look of sadness across his face??
