How to stop a nosebleed

Follow these steps to stop a nosebleed:

Sit up straight and tip your head slightly forward.

Note: Do not tilt your head back. This may cause blood to run down the back of your throat, and you may swallow it. Swallowed blood can irritate your stomach and cause vomiting. And vomiting may make the bleeding worse or cause it to start again. Spit out any blood that gathers in your mouth and throat rather than swallowing it.

Blow all the clots out of your nose. This may require fairly forceful blowing, and the bleeding may increase when clots come out of the nose.

After blowing out the clots, use your thumb and forefinger to firmly pinch the soft part of your nose shut. You will have to breathe through your mouth.

Apply an ice pack to your nose and cheeks. Cold will constrict the blood vessels and help stop the bleeding.
Keep pinching for a full 10 minutes. Use a clock to time the 10 minutes. It can seem like a long time. Resist the urge to peek after a few minutes to see if your nose has stopped bleeding.

Check to see if your nose is still bleeding after 10 minutes. If it is, hold it for 10 more minutes. Most nosebleeds will stop after 10 to 20 minutes of direct pressure.

Put a light coating of a moisturizing ointment, such as Vaseline, inside your nose. Do not blow your nose or put anything else inside your nose for at least 12 hours after the bleeding has stopped.

Rest quietly for a few hours.

Nosebleeds in children

Crying increases the blood flow to the face and makes bleeding from the nose worse. If your child has a nosebleed and is crying, speak in a quiet, relaxed manner to help control your child's fear.

Make sure to check for an object in the nostrils. If an object is found, go to the topic Objects in the Nose.

Symptoms to Watch For During Home Treatment

Use the Check Your Symptoms section to evaluate your symptoms if any of the following occur during home treatment:

A nosebleed cannot be stopped after 10 to 20 minutes of direct pressure.

Nosebleeds recur 4 or more times in 1 week after trying prevention measures.

Nosebleeds become more severe or more frequent.

turn upside down. put pressures on ithttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?...

Call 911--whatever you do, don't turn upside down or tilt back (unless you want to swallow and then throw up your blood)

Pinch the top area of your nose with an ice pack. The clots are fine. That means it's trying to stop bleeding. Don't remove the clots, if you can help it. Breathe through your mouth.

if it is starting to clot, the means it is starting to harden, therefore stop. so make sure that you don't like stick the tissue up in your nose b/c that will irritate it and make it go on longer. and try squeezing the nostrils together.

Pinch the bridge of your nose not your nostrils. It will help cut the blood off to your nose and let the blood clot up so it will stop.

P.S. lay off the cocaine......haha

no clots means that your body is attempting to stop the nose bleed. I used to get them as a child and all thourgh my teens and on occasion still do as a child. so I would suggest soaking alcohol onto a tisssue and holding that up against your nose. Also you can try a cold towel on your forehead and applying pressure on the bridge of your nose to stop the flow of blood. Hope this helps.

no nothings wrong try lying on something on your back so it helps stop the blood from coming.

The best thing to do is sit still and relax because rapid heart beat does not help. Get some moist paper towels and apply them to the bottom of your nose (dry paper towels will stick to the clot and they will pull it out when you remove them). Then, make an ice pack and hold it around the top of your nose near your forehead. Remember to relax and sit still and what ever you do, DON'T LEAN YOUR HEAD BACK. That can be very dangerous because it's possible for the blood to go down your trachea and enter your lungs. If the bleeding doesn't slow down within an hour, you should have someone take you to the ER or call an ambulance.

There are three types of nose bleeds that you should be aware of. The first is the mild nosebleed, which most of the time occurs in healthy people that might have blown in their nose too hard, or with any sudden and strong force that is applied to the nose. The blood could be as little as a drop or a tablespoon, and will just stop when slight pressure is applied. Next is the moderate nose bleed, where the blood is controlled within ten minutes of pressure. This could occur for persons that have certain conditions , and as a result of certain actions such as sudden force to the nose. Extreme heat may also be a cause for some who have this condition. First aid can suffice in controlling this condition. However, there are extreme conditions that after almost 20 minutes of pressure, blood still flows. Call the hospital immediately and ask for professional medical assistance.
When a nose bleed occurs, there is a common rule that we have to tilt the head so that the blood will not go out. The bad news is, the blood will not stop if you tilt your head. In fact, it will just take matters worse, since not only will it not help, the blood could be swallowed and induce vomiting in the patient. Let them sit straight and blow out all the blood in there. Expect more blood when it
