I have heard different things about popping fingers and such, last I heard it isnt bad to pop them, its air between the joints and thats what that pop noise is. I used to hear that it would make your joints swell after awhile. I pop mine out of habit without noticing, and I feel a need to pop my neck. But last person I talked to said it was okay to pop them and it wont cause damage. I guess I would ask a doctor to be sure.

I think it's the air between the bone and the muscle or something like that, not completley sure might be something along those lines.

There's no definite hypothesis (theory) on what actually causes it. However, there are quite a few theories which attempt to describe it.

The most common one I've heard is the transferal of nitrous oxide (explaining why you can only do it once, when the gas has been moved across). However, no idea how credible that theory is.

I'd recommend wikipedia.

It is the air between the bones.

I had a doctor tell me when I was younger that there are small fluid filled pockets at the joints, when it is moved in an unnatural manner, it breaks open this sack and "lubricates" the joints so it frees up the joint so it can move smoother. This breaking open, is what causes the cracking noise
