Are antibiotics necessary to clear up sinus and ear infections?!

Question: I'm pretty sure I have a sinus infection and am prone to ear infections (which is kind of odd for an adult) and I don't want to go to the doctor to get antibiotics. Do these things clear up on their own eventually? I've been doing a sinus rinse 2xs daily hoping this will clear it up.

I had problems for years with this but about10 years ago a friend made me lay down and put hydrogen peroxide in my ears---two time a day for a couple days should work and it also took care of the sinus infections although i dont know why--pour just a small capful pour in your ear and lay down--about 10 minutes or when the bubbles have almost stopped--ive never used nose sprays or cold meds again--however i do take a visteril ( benadryl) 1 a day and any time i feel one coming on i do this and it stops mmediatly--no q-tips!!

Doctors are now recommending skipping medication for ear infections. A placebo study was done and it turns out those who are medicated for the ear infections and those who aren't end up recovering within the same amount of time. However if the infection persists for over 2 days, consult your physician, though usually they do clear up on their own.

As for sinus infections - antibiotics are not necessary, but do help manage pain and will aid in your recovery.

Yes.

not sure

Anytime I've ever had a sinus infection, I had to have antibiotics. And I get them at least a couple times a year. The longer you let it go, the worse you will feel.

Not necessary, but things could go either way. It is best to see a doctor, see what he/she recommends, and take it from there. Severe enough infections could cause deafness.

neti pots rule....keep using it

i strongly suggest taking the antibiotics.

When ever I try to clear mine up at home, I get worse. Seems to me the antibiotic is the only thing that ever helps once the word "intection" comes to play.

When you use antibiotics your immune system doesn't have a chance to immune itself against this particular virus. I would wait it out. Then if it doesn't clear up by itself in a week or the pain is too sever I would go to the Doc. but I was prone to ear infections as a child and they pumped me full of Antibiotics and now I have virtually NO immune system to fight off infections I have to get anti-biotics for everything, I mean EVERYTHING. So the best thing you can do is let your body do it's job and fight it off itself. Get plenty of fluids keep doing your rinses and rest plenty of rest.

Hi there! I have actually just gone to the doctor and she says yes that I have to the antibiotics. I have a sinus infection and both ears are infected. The rinse may help with the symptoms for a bit, however it won't clear up the infection.
Hope it helps!

Okay, I had sinus too. What i want you to do is buy the new Oral B brush and get a sensodyn paste! You might be wondering what this has to do with mucas in your nose. Well, brush thrice a day and you will see mucas melt slowly although it contains viruses that only anti-biotics can get rid off. Brushing you teeth regularly will definatly help long term. Keep cleaning you nose with a warm wet towal too so it brings you some relief. Then later, start meditation which will surely help. I am sorry to know you have sinus it really sux but you will be fine soon. God bless you!

It'll clear up eventually, (or possibly get worse and kill you, not likely). There are natural antibiotics like Garlic and some others that may help, do some research, but be careful, if you loose your hearing, sense of smell or taste your life will never be the same.

antibiotics are for severe sinuitis---as far as ear infections they can go away on their own but antibiotics will def get rid of them faster----for sinus infection a good thing to do for relief is to use a humidifier---

It'll clear up on its own but you must be cautious because it can develop into pneumonia or something worse if it doesn't go away. My advice is to take the antibiotics if the illness doesn't go away within a week.

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic. It would treat the ear infections and the sinus infection at the same time. If your son got this infection after he stopped the antibiotic, then I would call the doctor again.

If they decide not to give you any more medicine. I would get a humidifier and some baby Tylenol. It does stink that we can not buy the baby cold products anymore. I used them with my daughter and my son until they were pulled off the market. I would understand if they were recalled due to an issue with the product, but to recall something because some people might not be bright enough to properly read the directions - please. I sort of wish I had stocked up on them.

However on the flip side, people survived for years before these products were invented and our kids will adapt and learn to fight off these illnesses. I just hate to see them so uncomfortable.

I had an ear infection last year that seemed to NEVER go away. I took so many bottles of antibiotics and went to the doctor so many times. It lasted over a month. It was incredibly painful. My grandma came over and saw how much pain I was in and refused to take me to the doctor again. (It was so bad I was off balance! I couldn't even drive!!) She left for about and hour and came back with a bottle of olive oil and some leaves from a ruda (aka "Rue")plant. She heated the olive oil up in a little metal lid (from my spice jar) with a small candle underneath it with some of the leaves in it. After the oil was really green she put a couple drops in both ears (she said even though only 1 was infected I need to put it in both) and INSTANTLY my ear made a little crackling sound and it opened up, headache was gone, I could hear! I felt fine the next day! I repeated the treatment the next day anyway though. I would say, stay away from those horrible pills and shots. Grandma knows best. She also said you could make a tea with the leaves to help you sleep ;) Lots of places actually have this plant growing everywhere. I posted a link of the picture for you. Just use the leaves!

It depends. In general, antibiotics are used to kill harmful bacteria, so it that is directly responsible for the sinus/ear infections, then that is a possible treatment.

If the infection is viral in nature, antibiotics in general would not be used. They do not kill viruses.

But this is not the ONLY way to treat sinus/ear infections. So my answer to the question "are antibiotics NECESSARY" would be no.
