My lower back/tailbone area hurts so badly-what could be wrong?!

Question: I fell on the ice back in december or november, and its been hurting so bad lately. I worked out pretty regularly throughout the past few months, because the pain hadn't hurt at all..but then recently i started playing tennis more often then usual and it has been SO painful. like i can't sit, lay, or stand without being in unbearable pain. The only moderatly comfortable position is when i lay on my side. It hurts when i bend over a lot, its like a shooting pain sort of aching and then sharp to. It also hurts a lot when i cross my ankles then press outwards. what have i done, and how can i make it feel better?

Your fall last year probably has nothing to do with it, since you didn't have pain until recently.

Shooting pain could be joint pain or arthritis. Muscle swelling from over-excercising can cause this. You could try taking vitamin/mineral suppliments and not over-doing the excercising. Ibuprofen (advil) can reduce swelling, but you shouldn't take it for more than a week.

If it doesn't go away, it's probably something serious and you should see a doctor for a checkup.

You might have broken your tailbone or you could have a pyonidal (sp) cyst. Get to your doctor.

With that much pain, you really ought to see a doc.

Mine described it like this - the tailbone is like a finger, and if you land on your butt and bend it the wrong way, you will get the pain, and for a long time. I landed in my rear back in college, several years ago, and for the past week, guess what's hurtin'? But I'm not getting debilitating pain like yours, just an annoyance.

Suggestions for now:

Take Motrin or Advil. I happen to like ibuprofen best for muscle and bone pains. Take it religiously ever 4-6 hours for inflammation. Tylenol is okay too.

Go buy a donut pillow to take stress off your tailbone when you sit. I happen to like the U-shaped neck pillows, but they do make pillows specifically for the tailbone, so nothing presses against it.

Try putting a towel under your low back to elevate the pelvis a little and take strain off the tailbone. Try putting a pillow under your knees. Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees.

Use a heating pad.

For pain that bad, a doctor visit is definitely warrented, maybe even the ER, but until you can get in, these suggestions might help.
