Is an IV in the hand worse then the one in the arm?!

Question: I'm having an operation Monday and have to have the dreaded IV. I'm not afraid of having my leg cut off but I am terrified Ivs. Because I may need to use my crutches i want the IV in my arm. Is this more or less painful to put in then an IV in the hand?

Ask the nurse who inserts your line to use lidocaine first. It makes a big difference, I know from my own experience. Don't forget that the IV is started by inserting a needle, but that the needle is removed and just a thin plastic catheter, or tiny tube is left in the vein. This shouldn't cause pain. Good luck, I'm both an RN and a freqent surgical patient.

I've had both several times and I don't really care for it in my hand. It seems to move around and get pinched and hurt more than in the arm. But it seems to be what a lot of medical folks prefer and when I'm in their house they are the boss.

I've had both and the one in the hand SUCKS! Go for the arm it's less constricting and less painful.

It's not worse in either place. In the hand, it will be more prone to coming out or getting snagged on stuff because you move the hand around a lot. For your case, they might actually do something more drastic like in the neck that way it stays more out of the way.

Seemed to hurt about the same to me.

the IV in the arm is usually more painful as they have to go deeper to get a good vein, stick with the hand.

I hate having them in the hand because there are more nerve endings there to transmit pain, but, because I donated blood so many times, there is so much scar tissue in my arms, it is difficult to get one in the arm any more.

It is worse in the hand then in the arm .I know i have had one in the hand and arm .
