I don't get it either. Doctors are not gods; neither is any other professional in any area. There will always be things they don't know anything about. No one can possibly be an expert on every subject, especially when the subject is YOU, and they see hundreds if not thousands of people in a given year. Also, sometimes they're downright bad at their jobs!

I think it's good to get second (or third or fourth) opinions just like you would for your car or home repairs, etc. It's amazing people do more shopping around for basic things like that than care for their own bodies.

Maybe because the professionals know more about health than lay people.

professionals should know best!
Good luck!

i agree with you, people should be able to be self-relient.
but to answer the question ...
either they would have no idea what they are doing or they dont want to learn. also the professionals have dedicated their lives, time, energy, and possibly their reputation to know what they are doing and to do it correctly

By definition, a Professional is someone that specializes in and is paid for that service. They are sought because they are well practiced in the service you seek.

Normally, a person chooses one trade, and are really good at that trade. But, because they are focused on that trade, they aren't so informed about other trades. So, to obtain the advice they need in that other trade, they seek a professional to assist or guide them. This DOES NOT MEAN they TURN OFF THEIR OWN BRAIN. Of course, the end responsibility is with the person seeking advice. We have to balance what they say with what we know. If we're not sure or have reason not to fully trust the first Professional opinion we seek, then it's perfectly normal and acceptable to seek another Professional opinion.

No matter what, you must realize who stands to make money from the decisions you make. For example, if you seek advise for a Real Estate agent, they all have a bias towards selling houses. These people will not tell you the market will collapse. For this type of decision, you need to seek out multiple Professional advices.... not all from the same fields. For example, A Real Estate agent and an Economist.

because people don't' understand how complex the body is
a professional would be better informed and more knowledgeable

I understand why people go to a professional for advice, because some things are better learned through first hand experience - you can't self-diagnose everything on the internet. However I don't understand why people trust doctors implicitly, like they aren't human and don't make mistakes. Sometimes no matter how well you try to explain something you can't really get someone else to fully understand what you're experiencing as far as symptoms.

Doctors are necessary, but people need to understand that they are there to give advice and a professional opinion and make recommendations - the decisions are ultimately yours. It really annoys me when doctors try to do a procedure without explaining what it is, why they think it's necessary, etc. and basically treat you like a child or even get verbally abusive if you ask too many questions or decline it. I have no problem declining a procedure unless they're willing to take the time to give me a good reason for it, but most people aren't like that and take whatever the doctors says as law, and that's the part I find disturbing. Not that people go to doctors first (there are other things I trust to professionals without trying to do them myself, like fixing my car or a hole in my roof) but that they have become afraid to take responsibility for their own healthcare decisions and stand up for their rights as patients.
