If the pain goes down one leg it could be sciatica. The pain starts at the base of the spine, into the buttock, the thigh and the calf, right into the foot and the big toe. It feels like a throbbing sometimes, sharp agonising pain other times, or as I recently experienced - the feeling that your leg is on fire! What helped me was to lay on my side with my legs slightly bent up towards my tummy. I used a heat pad at the base of my spine. A pillow between the knees helps keep the hips aligned.
Be wary of massage as in some cases it may do more harm than good. Avoid too much movement for a day or so and however bad you feel, you must see a doctor.
Take regular pain medication, the strongest you can until you can see that doc. Good luck mate, I do sympathise with you as I've only just got over sciatica myself.

your better off going to a chriopacter as they can help you better than a doctor as that's what I did.

You may be experiencing muscles spasms. Talk to your doctor when you go to your appointment and ask him if this could be it. Best of luck and I hope that you get better.

hmm.. maybe it has to do with the way your sleeping. Put hot/cold patches on your backs and massage them frequently. If the pain is really bad take some Advil or something, like pain killers. Most of the back pains you have when your younger usually has to do with posture. Make sure your standing up straight and sit up straight. Dont slouch your shoulders or wear your backpack on only one side of your shoulder all the time. Stretch frequently and go see a chiropractor.

One effective method to relieve your lower back pain is to apply cold treatment followed by heat. You can do this by applying ice to the affected area for the first two days, to help decrease swelling and pain. After two days, you can then apply heat to the same area to loosen the muscles and decrease spasm. You should begin gentle stretching only to the point of tolerance and not overstretch it.

In addition, muscle relaxants may be prescribed if muscle spasm is a significant component of the back pain. These medications usually offer only moderate benefits at best and are not meant for long-term use. They can be helpful to use at night if the back pain is causing sleepless nights. The most common prescribed muscle relaxants are Flexeril, Norflex and Soma.
