I have the same thing going on. This started for me in mid Dec. and hurts like crazy about 3-4 mornings a week. The pain only lasts until I can get up and walk around for a while but the pain is often so sharp that it will wake me from a sound sleep. Big toe on my left foot and maybe my second toe also. I also have some pain in the big toe of my right foot but much less severe than in my left foot. I was tested for diabetes (negative) and checked for gout (negative).

If your pain was caused by gout then the pain would be continuous and would not let up during the day. Gout comes in bouts that last a week or so and then fade away. Gout is usually caused by heavy drinking and eating lots of rich organ meats. I'm doing none of either.

My current tentative diagnosis is neuropathy or nerve damage from an unknown cause. I've seen several Drs and so far have gotten no good reason for why this started and when it might stop. I am trying the prescription medication Neurontin which is often prescribed for neuropathy but I am not sure it is helping. Maybe it is making the attacks less frequent but certainly no less painful.

From your profile you look appear to be a young lady so I hope for your sake that you do not have neuropathy. You are too young to be having neuropathy. The bad news is that if you do have neuropathy then the pain sensations may be permanent or even get worse over time.

Lyrica is another newer drug being used to treat neuropathic pain but it is much more expensive than Neurontin so I have not tried it yet. Good luck and if you find an answer for your toe pain then let me know what it is.

You may have gout - can you stand to touch your toes, or have the bedcovers rub against them? If not, sounds like gout.
