Not sure if it is under the radar or not? Why do people need genetic counseling? Because one or both people want children and one or both carry a specific genetic problem. Therefore, I do not know the Numbers of people who have problematic gene, that might be passed to a child, or all children. Likewise females over a certain age, who get pregnant are having a risky pregnancy, so might need counseling. I do not think their is a catch, except the Numbers. I have only met one family in my life to date who have a genetic problem and they have 3 children, all boys, with various disabilities. Some reckon they should have stopped after the first child, some reckon they should have stopped after the second child. However, one in four children will be normal, so I assume they went with the odds, numbers. The third child is normal.
You need to do some research and find out the % of population that might be carriers of specific genetic problems. In the USA the % will be bigger, due to the large population, but in say a small isalnd like Ireland, chances are you would be lucky to locate one genetic counsellor. Therefore you put all that effort into College, University qualify and then realise you have no job! Best of Luck
