A percocet/Oxycodone question?!

Question: I have a question about stopping Percocet/Oxycodone cold turkey. I broke my back when I was 15. Since August, I've been having serious problems with it and have been on Percocet (since August). I just recently had major back surgery and have been on 30 mgs of Oxycodone every 4-6 hours. Until recently it never bothered me. It just started to make me so nausus ( spelling ) It's getting to the point where I want to just stop taking everything! I do remember my DR saying that it's not fatal to just stop taking narcotic pain relievers but, I'm scared of withdrawls. How would I feel if I just stopped and is there any suggestions on what to do about withdrawls?

I have the same problem...only my withdrawls are from Oxycontin. Physical withdrawls are very hard. They cause cold sweats, nausea, vomiting, nervousness, restlessness in the arms and legs. etc. I would recommend seeing your doctor and find out if he would prescribe a medication called Subutex. This is a medication that is taken to help the withdrawl symptoms at bay. It works great! Good Luck! I know it's hard. I broke my neck 10 years ago and suffer with chronic pain and numbness in arms and legs everyday.

There is a painkiller called fentanyl that comes in a 72 hour patch. I use it now instead of oxycodone. It doesn't make you loopy and it's also easy on your bowels. No constipation. Ask your doc about it.

If you're up to 30 mg of Oxycodone per dose, I highly recommend **not** quitting cold turkey.

That's a LOT of Oxycodone and you would definitely go through a withdrawl.

The best thing to do is talk to your doctor about either changing medications or slowly tapering the medication down (either completely, or until you reach a comfortable level with side-effects). Don't do this alone.

30 mgs every 4-6 hours is a high dosage - one could easily have withdrawal symptoms from stopping abruptly. I think another call to your Dr is in order.

Narcotic withdrawals vary in terms of severity from individual to individual. It sounds like you're on a moderate dose. If you stop cold turkey, you can ask your physician to prescribe some clonidine (perhaps 0.1 mg TID x 10 days). Most people say it's like they have the flu for a few days. Aches, salivation, sweating, and dilated pupils for a few days. I've spoken to quite a few people who say it's really not that bad. Some people titrate their dose down, i.e. 4 tablets a day, then 3 per day, then 2 per day, etc. I think that that would be more painful b/c it drags the process out for a week or so.

I definitely recommend talking with your doctor, he may switch you to something else, I believe he would suggest decreasing your dosage slowly. Withdrawals are very similar to the flu for alot of people. Chills, sweating, nausea, possible vomiting. I'm not saying this to scare you, but you should never make this big of a decision without your doctor. 30mg of oxycodone every 4-6 hours is a large dose. Good luck
