I would like to be a CNA?!

Question: I have been thinking about becoming a CNA. I would like some info on being one, especially if you are one so I can know what it is like hands on. What are the pros and cons? Thanks for any answers ahead of time. ;o)

Well if you are a person that truly has a heart and wants to help people and even......well you know, it might be a really rewarding thing however this was my experience.

I quickly realized that nursing homes and hospitals but NH in particular are nothing more than a capital business just like anything else. They put the Almighty dollar before everything and Nursing homes are incredibly understaffed. In my opinion there is absolutely no way that you can give the care a person needs with the help they want to staff. Example, two aids on a 60 bed floor at night.

Also there are a lot of attitudes. If you get along good with a Nurse your fine but a lot of these nurses seem like they got their license out of a cracker-jack box. Instead of answering a call light they are standing right next to; they will walk 50 feet down a hallway to get you; while you are busy to tell you a call light is on. Their BOZO 2/4 year RN course or Year LPN course really goes to their heads and you will soon realize that the CNA's are the entire backbone of the operation. Your lucky to see a nurse do anything anymore. But there Nurses?

Like I said, your heart can be in it, but the majority of the people's aren't and that can really make you sick. Also if someone doesn't like you, they can accuse you of anything, so make sure you always have someone with you in a room to see what you are doing. A nurse can lie about anything and ruin your life with a HRS investigation.

I don't do it anymore because of the bull in it. Nurses that preach but don't do a thing and don't know a thing BUT, it can be fun, if you are a real people person, and mind your own business its cool, gossip and everything like everything else.

It can be rewarding, steady hours with the opportunity to always pull a double shift because people call off, so it is the one job that pays a lot of Overtime. If you want to do it. DOing this you can bring home more than a real nurse. You get benefits. HOwever you will work weekends and holidays, 2nd shift was my favorite. It all depends on the people, but thats anywhere. You must have compassion, patience and understanding. If you don't give a darn about the people, its not for you.

Working as a CNA is great because you will always find work no matter where you live. I am not a CNA but a friend of mine was. It is better to work at a regular hospital not a senior care home. It only takes a few weeks to get certified and they will pay you if you work as a NA while you take the CNA class. Also once you become a CNA most hospitals and care homes will pay for you to become an LVN. There is also a LVN to RN program. One more bennifit is you may work mornings, days, or nights. Good luck.......

Being a CNA is a lot of hard work for little pay. Might as well be a nurse, you would get more respect and they are greatly needed.
