Back Hurting in Morning...?!

Question: I always go to sleep early. Have a nice routine that settles me down before so I can fall to sleep quickly. But when i wake up in the morning around 2 or 3, my back is hurting and no matter what side I turn onto, I cannot get comfortable. Is it just my back or is my mattress to blame? And how would I fix it so it would be comfy?

Sounds like your mattress or the positioning of your head upon your pillow(s). have you tried/compared a nights rest upon your bed vs the couch, pallet on th efloor, or in a chair? Could be an overly soft/hard mattress. Also I would suggest changing between sleeping with more pillows and less pillows for a few days at a time on each to see if their is any differance in the muscle tension.

Get a new mattress.

definitely sounds like your mattress.

we both have bad backs, so my husband, luvable genius that he is bought a firm one. now my back hurts more

then i found out, firm, or soft are worse for your back. you should go with medium.

and they need to be rotated every (6?) months. top to bottom, and flip them over as well.

and spend $$$ on a good mattress, cheap ones just cause probs later.

buy a new bed mate

if the whole new matress thing doesnt work, try sleeping on your back. think about how unnatural the shape of your spine is when you are on your side! its not a huge surprise you would get back pain when you twist on funny angles like that! and also the pressure on your shoulder!

flip your matress but you'll probably need a new one

It could be due to the mattress. May be it is too soft. You have to get a matress that could support your back.

Hard to say if it's 'just' your mattress but you could start with that. I don't know how old or new your mattress is, but they do have a certain 'lifespan'.

One thing to do to keep them in better condition, like NSangel said, is to turn them regularly. I even think it's every 3 months. When you do go out and buy a new mattress, don't make the mistake to buy one with an attached top: you can not turn them upside down and now after less than a year it already starts to feel uncomfortable...it's just as good to get those seperate and we should have done that. As far as I know, rotation instructions (turn around and upside down) come with a new mattress.

If that doesn't help, you could try seeing a dr for backproblems because it might not be 'just' your mattress alone, could be an underlying physical problem. But mattresses are mostly to blame for your symptoms, so I would start there, depending on the age of your mattress and the firmness. Got to start somewhere, right?

2 things - the mattress may be old and non--supportive enough, but I think its the pillow(s) you are using. Pillows are important to level your neck out so it won't make your head or back hurt. If your mattress is say 10 years old, you may want to try a firmer mattress. Are you a side sleeper? Stomach sleeper? Back sleeper? These things all matter.

WOW, I am so sorry to hear that you are having issues with your back. Like so many other Americans now a days we have to deal with all the aches and pain of everyday living, and to tell the truth, it hurts like hell.

My advice for you is this; learn to do some simple stretches that will work on your back muscles ( I have included a site to help you with this), you could buy a knee, or better know as a leg wedge pillow (link also provided) that can help you while you sleep at night. And as a last and final note, buy a new bed, but please make that a LAST result since they are cost worthy and a lot of them don't do what they say they can do.

I hope that I have helped you in some way or another and I hope that your pain eases over time with the advice that I gave to you about exercising those muscles.

P.S. I know exercise sucks, but if it will help your pain go away, it is better to say that you have tried than to have never tried at all. Good luck!

A firm mattress is good for a bad back: so is a waveless water bed. I start off on my stomach, then, after a few minutes, start sleeping on my side.
