Should I get a epidural? Is it really that bad?!

Question: Epidurals are great...especially for childbirth! They are next to painless. There is always someone to create anxiety... stay away from them...it is all about drawing attention to themselves.

Listen to me

Take the free drugs!!!!
ans yes it is

Yes, is the best, you can have your baby without mayor pain.
100% recomended

No, it's not THAT bad in hind sight. If you are strong woman and you have faith you won't need the drugs. You'll be better off without them and so will the baby.

When I had my baby, I decided that I was going to go natural for as long as I could stand it. Well when we hit the 24 hour mark, that was it. I got an epidural and LOVED IT!!! Almost immediate pain relief.

6 hours after my epidural my daughter was born. She was perfectly healthy. The epidural didn't effect my ability to push, I saw absolutely no negative repercussions.

Most people worry about the actual stick they have to do when giving the epidural, they numb your skin VERY well.... and truthfully, I didn't feel the puncture at all.

I've had two epidurals and really its not that bad. Make sure you have had a good amount of gas and air first like i did, i didnt feel a thing. You dont feel the contractions anymore, more like pressure when it comes time to push.
Just make sure someone is on hand afterwards, cos one of your legs will have no feeling if not both and you dont want to end up on the deck.

yes it is, although people will try and convinve you otherwise - its not so much the pushing baby out (the famous "ring of fire" pain) which hurts because that part is not that bad (believe it or not) but the stuff leading up to that REALLY hurts and not in a pain way - but in an achy way. Its really hard to describe but think of the worst period pain you've ever had being constantly there in your stomach. Then times that by 10 and imagine it being in the small of your back every few minutes getting more and more constant. Until it just doesnt go away (if you dont have an epidural nows the time for the gas and air by the way which makes you very giggly)

If you do have an epidural you get like a button to press which releases some drugs when it hurts - they will take this off you just before you give birth because you need to feel wear the baby is so they dont have to cut you or use forceps (ouch!)

Put it this way - the labour pains are much worse than a small scratch in your back. Some women think you should feel the pain to make you appreciate the process and your baby more. I think they should Frack Off!

The birth experience is one of the most traumatic, horrific, wierd, wonderful and rewarding expereinces you will ever go through and believe me at the end of it, no matter how you got there, you will be so proud of yourself!! Good Luck to ya Mummy!

Wife is a Labor & Delivery nurse. She had an epidural for each of our kids. She wouldn't do it if there were any risk to the baby. In fact, one could argue greater risk without the epidural since you may not be able to make it and your kid would have to be delivered by emergency C-section. Bad for you (days+ to recover, instead of hours) and bad for baby since it won't pass through the birth canal to expell fluid from the lungs.
