GENERAL GUIDELINES
To give blood for transfusion to another person, you must be healthy, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old if allowed by state law, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days) or a donation of double red cells in the last 16 weeks (112 days). "Healthy" means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, "healthy" also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control.

Other aspects of each potential donor's health history are discussed as part of the donation process before any blood is collected. Each donor receives a brief examination during which temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood count (hemoglobin or hematocrit) are measured

Your blood sugar does not need to be high. Just as long as you don't have a cold or any diseases, you will be fine. They feed you cookies and juice afterwards to build up your blood sugar, since you are exsanguinating your nutrients along with your blood. You need to stick around for a few minutes afterward so they can monitor for hypovolemic hypotension, but you should be good to go. You should not go on an empty stomach, though, because you could feel faint after donating. A candy bar is OK, but protien would be better.

I agree with Furry Nurse and 1 more thing you need to know is the place to donate. Can't donate blood if you don't know the place.

Drink lots of water!!! Start drinking extra water NOW! I passed out the 3rd time I donated because I hadn't had enough water. Also make sure you eat a good breakfast and/or lunch... probably not right before you donate but an hour or 2 before. I almost passed out the last time I donated (the 8th time) because I hadn't eaten much that day. They will give you some snacks and drinks after you donate.

Water is important to get your blood volume up so your blood pressure doesn't drop too much when they take the pint. It also makes finding a good vein in your arm a lot easier... I had blood drawn last week and the tech had a really hard time getting a good vein because I was dehydrated.

take a cup of milk with 1/3 spoon turmeric boiled after it. trust me it helps alot 2 regain ur activeness.. rest all have answerred. good luck n dats good u r letting sm1 xcept mosquitoes to have ur blood:-)
