Why does the tongue bleed so much when it has such a small cut?!

Question: The tongue doesn't bleed any more than any other part of the body. However, the tongue is located in the mouth. And in the mouth there is saliva. Now, when the blood coming from the tongue is mixed with the saliva, there only appears to be more blood than there actually is since the blood is diluted. If you could take only the blood which comes from the cut on the tongue (and not the saliva-blood mixture) you will find that there is not much difference between it and another part of the body.

i don't know about a small cut but when i was about 4 years old, i fell off a fence and bit my tongue so hard that i pierced it. before i could run twenty yards, i was spitting out a mouthful of blood. and this went on every twenty yards until i got to my mother. at that point i passed out and woke in the hospital.

so a warning to those that want a tongue piercing. if it starts to bleed heavily, get to the hospital. if you ignore it, you could bleed out, then swallow into your stomach. and nobody would know until you didn't wake up.

because your tongue is a muscle and your muscle is made up of soft tissue, fibrous tissue blood to keep it a healthy muscle,,,,

When any other part of the body, exposed to air, bleeds, the blood clots after contact with oxygen of the air. When the mouth is closed, the bleeding tongue is not exposed to oxygen. However, the saliva stops bleeding if the cut is small.
