What do you call the (rope) that's used to cut off the blood supply to a wou!

Question: Is there a special name for it, I think it begins with 't'?
Do they use it in hospitals or just war zones and that kind of thing?

Sorry for being vague.

Tourniquet......its a french word actually.

We were discouraged from using them to cut the blood supply to an open wound.

The preferred methed is now to apply pressure the the area bleeding.

The point being that cutting the blood supply and the whole limb starts to die.....but if there is no choice.....

tourniquet

TOOR-NI-KAY

tourniqet.

A tourniquet

tourniquet

tourniqet, i should imagine its used at war, but maybe also by paramedics who have to do something quickly when they attend a casualty.

Tourniquet

Tourniquet, pronounced tor-ni-kay.

They are used for a variety of reasons - for example, nurses apply a tourniquet lightly (so as to cut off venous return but not arterial supply) to take blood from a patient's veins or put a cannula in. In a war zone they may be applied tightly to stop massive bleeding, but they carry many risks and are somewhat of a last resort. They can also be used for medical procedures - for example a Bier's block uses a pneumatic tourniquet (use air to compress) to cut off blood supply to a limb so that local anaesthetic can be used to relocate a fracture.

In English, it is pronounced tur-ni-kit. It can be a strip of cloth or a piece of rubber or even a blood pressure cuff.

It is used to constrict blood flow so surgeons can operate without so much blood. I work for a podiatrist and we use them on toes during toenail removal and on the ankle during foot surgery.

In an emergency, they are used to stop blood flow as a last resort to keep someone from bleeding to death. It is very dangerous because lack of blood can kill the tissue below the tourniquet and the limb might have to be removed.

Tourniquet? It`s not a rope, though

It is called a tourniquet. They are used anytime when the bleeding cannot be stopped by direct pressure. They are used by all medics, combat and civilian in cases where bleeding must be stopped to save life.
One should use a tourniquet as a last resort only as thy cut off all blood flow in the area, prolonged use of a tourniquet can result in loss of limb.
Removal of a tourniquet that has been on longer than 20 minutes should only be done at hospital as the cold blood on the other side of the tourniquet can stop the heart.
