I hate when that happens.

Having expirence from jamming many fingers just through sports, I know the pain you were in. From trying to set a serve in volleyball and jamming my thumbs or dribbling the ball with my finger tips in basketball and jamming my fingers I've been in a lot of pain through those two sports.

The best thing you can do would be to keep icing it if it really hurts. Do not try popping, pulling, or even touching that area. It will get better soon I promise, it just takes time to heal. It will health itself and you soon will be better.

If you think it's still not getting better than you could buy a splint and medical tape. Wrap it up in that and that should help you a lot too. It helps to protect the finger so you don't rejam it.

Best of luck. :]

LEAVE IT ALONE!!

let your body do what it needs to do in order to heal, just as the body has done for millions of years.

if you can bend it without screaming then you probably didn't break it. if you can't then go get it x-rayed.

and next time, be more careful.

Hi dear.....you want a quick fix and there aren't any.

You have injured yourself quite badly, as a matter of fact. You may think you "just" jammed your finger, however, your finger thinks it was traumatized quite a bit!!!! You'll have to give it some time to heal and it will heal as quickly as it can if you do what you can.

The ice is great. But you can't stop. Put it on for about 20 minutes and off for a couple hours, then on again. You have to do this all day, dear.

Then tomorrow, apply heat. You see.....just like a building that has been crushed, there's a bunch of clean up to do. Inside your finger there are seriously damaged cells. Blood cells, muscle cells, 3 different layers of skin cells. There's a lot of trash laying around and it takes time to clean it up. There are special blood cells that consume and carry away the trashed cells.

By adding the cold the first 24 hours of an injury, you reduce the amount of damage and swelling.

After 24 hours, what you have is what you have. The clean up begins and the heat will encourage more circulation to the injury site and will help all those clean-up crews to do their job quicker than if you didn't help them.

Do NOT TRY TO POP ANYTHING, girl!!! You don't know yet what you've done!! You may have broken your knuckle or your bone. You may have just "cracked" the bone. Non the less, it needs to rest so it can do it's job. Take 2-3 extra
strength tylenol for the pain every 4-6 hours. Wrap your finger to protect it from bumping it and from bending it or using it.

Don't wrap it so tight that it will affect the circulation. But you want to "stabilize" it.

Tomorrow will tell the tale. If it continues to be badly swollen and is very bruised, you may indeed have done bone damage and you may want to see your doctor.

If you can move the finger however carefully with some pain, but not enough pain to keep you from moving it, then I would suggest you have bruised it badly. Usually with a broken bone, you cannot move it without screaming pain.

It will take at least a week, maybe two. Pamper that finger as long as it takes to heal. You will naturally begin to move it and use it as the pain goes away and you won't realize you are doing it.

Hope this helps
Good luck
I am an RN

I jammed my finger into a wall about a month and a half ago. I bought a splint which was about $3.50 and some first aid tape which was about $1.75. I left my finer in the splint for 7 days and wrapped it in medical tape for about 3 days with a neighboring finger. It felt better after about 8 days. Hope I helped!
