Knee pain from track (ouch)!?!

Question: Ok, my knee has been hurting since friday (4 days ago). Only one knee, my left knee and just below the knee cap (where there is a little bump on both knees). This bump (I'm guessing bone) sticks out more on the left knee (the hurting knee) than the right knee (normal knee) so i'm guessing its swollen or inflamed. I tried putting ice and that helps :D but doesn't make it better in the long run. It doesn't hurt when I stand still, or sit. Only sometimes when I walk and definitely when I run (hurts a lot). I tried Motrin and NSAIDs and icing, anything else I can do besides seeing a doctor (i will try to see one if it doesn't heal in another week). Is this normal? How long do these irritations usually last? (its already been 5 days) Can i still do track drills? (the coach makes me) :(

Yep, I have that too because of track.

It's called Osgood-Schlatter it's a disease and is a common overuse injury of the knee for preteens and teenagers

sounds as if you running with shin splints. I would lay off of it for awhile. They are very painful. To help you may need to try going to a podiatrist, have him check you walking gait. This means have him look at the way you walk with you posture. You may be favoring one side to much and need to correct it to even the shock on ur knees as you're running. Also look at what kind of shoes ur running in. When I ran track I used to use cheap shoes, when I bought better shoes, my problems all but disappeared. Also make sure you are getting enough potassium to help with any cramps or muscle aches
