I get terrible cramps in my legs when I am asleep. They wake me up. What is it?!

Question: For the past year this has been happening. I don't get any cramps during the day, just at night. Thanks in advance.

This actually used to happen to me quite frequently, and did happen the other day and it was so painful I woke up grabbed my leg and started screaming. I was told it was b/c I work out (carido mostly) for 1.5 to 2 hrs per day and I am dehydrated and also b/c I didn't have enough potassium in my body. I have since started drinking alot more water, (especially on days that I work out) and eating a banana when I come home from the gym (b/c they are loaded with potassium). I hadn't had any problems with cramping for like 8 months, until the other day. Hope that helped.
