How can I tell if my finger is broken?!

Question: Alright guys, we had state tests today and during our break, my friend decided to kick a chair really hard while my ring finger was between it and my chair. My finger has been hurting all day and swelled a bit. Also, the nail looks bluish toward the bottom and the skin where it hit, so I'm guessing it's just a bruise. but it hurts to do anything with it, but I can bend it for the most part.

My question to you guys, is it broken, bruised, or sprained? IF it's bruised, do you think it's the muscle or bone? and how long should it take to heal, because it's keeping me from playing sports which isn't a good thing.

Thanks guys! =]

If it was broken you'd feel the broken bones moving around in there, plus any bump to it would send you through the roof. the reason it hurts so bad is that it was a crush injury. Crush injuries usually hurt alot more then other types because "all" the soft tissues were insulted. So from what you described, I don't think it's broken. Even if it were, the doctor wouldn't do much to treat it. the more towards the tip...the less likely they'd do anything to treat it. Take naproxen for swelling and aspirin for pain, most of all ice it for 20min. several times a day, it's the "best" thing you can do for it. And if it hurts do do something with your finger...don't do that.

grab the sharpest filet knive you have. filet off your finger nail very carefully. if you see a lot of blood, it means its broken

Go to your doctor.

Well if you can bend it for the most part its not broken, she just smashed it really good, I had my thumb slammed in a car door once yeah not fun, it should feel better within a week seeing that you said your nail only looks bluish but with all injuiries its always best to have it checked out by a doctor just bc if it does turn out to be more serious you can get it fixed instead of letting heal on its own and that increases your risk to more serious injury.

The only way to determine if it is broken is by an x-ray.

If the nail gets too inflamed and swells up beyond a tolerable limit, go to the doctor and have them put a hole in it with a heated surgical steel needle.

It must be this steel as regular needles when heated change their molecular structure and can form an infection generating byproduct...(I think carbon or iron?)

Icing it will help as will keeping it elevated above the heart to reduce throbbing.

You may also piggyback it next to an adjacent finger with tape and or an over the counter metal splint to shield it from the bangs you will give it...

Your friend needs to grow up and do something with his anger management as he is obviously out of control with his emotions...and this moment cost you time, energy and pain...Maybe money if you see a doctor...

I would make him own up with a sincere apology and go with me to the doctor and pay the bill...Maybe then he would learn the lesson...

I broke my finger with a dogdeball so I would definately go to the doctor.
