Is it not possible to feel pain while you sleep?!

Question: I stupidly left a razor near my pillow last night and just as I woke up I cut my finger rather badly on it. Ordinarily I'd be in agony, but I don't recall feeling a thing. Could it be because I was still partially asleep? Can sleep prevent pain?

When you're asleep your body relaxes and your nervous responses become slower and milder. You could be still partially asleep and hence the pain doesn't register as it would when you are awake. Just like if you have chronic back pain or you fell and scratched your knee badly, the pain is always there but you don't feel it when you fall asleep.

interesting!!

im thinking it must in some cases!!
not all though!

i think so...i mean they do say that people hu die in their sleep, die painlessy. so yeh sleeping could prevent pain i guess.

My heart attack woke me up.

Sarge

i feel pain when i'm asleep. and it is always in my dreams.
i woke a few nights ago from a dream in which i had broken my wrist. in my dream i was crying out and screaming with agony, and when i woke up i was gripping my wrist really tightly. i had been lying awkwardly and my wrist was really sore.

It depends what state of sleep youre in and the ways in which that relates to your conscious awareness of your environment. The ways in which your brain waves change during sleep also distorts your sense of perception.

you will feel pain when you are asleep only your body has 'slowed down' or if you are in deep sleep it has almost 'shut down' heart rate goes down and nervous system slows down too

pain occurs when signals are sent to the brain about something being wrong.

although it is very strange what happened to you, i must say

keep razors away from your bed !!
