Doctor suggested not to quit smoking?!

Question: For the second time my husband comes back from his Dr appointment after having really bad coughs and fevers, saying that he suggested him not to quit smoking during this stressful times!? I am truly puzzled.
I quited smoking before getting pregnant, our son is 2 months old... and although he promised he'd quit after the baby was born he still smokes and sorry but he stinks! I am worry about him, I've seen him in bed for long days shivering and it seems to be in denial, doesn't want to face the truth... he's getting sick constantly, and it's obvious it's because of his cigarettes. If I even MENTION the subject he explodes and gives me temper tantrums that I better avoid! I'm scared, I know it's not easy to quit after 15 years, but is he lying to me?

which doctor told him not to quit? if it was a mental health doctor, like a psychiatrist, then I'd trust that, if it was a general practitioner, I'd call him and ask him his rationale for suggesting that your spouse continue to smoke. The new medication out now, called Chantix, makes it fairly easy to quit, so I am suspecting your hubby is in major denial. He is a new dad, that is pretty overwhelming and a huge responsibility, and he may feel that smoking is the only thing he has any control over as far as something he wants to do. I'd simply make him smoke outside so the baby isn't affected, and tell him to brush his teeth if he wants to kiss you.

The only condition I know of that nicotine has been shown to help is Crohn's disease- and doctors will give patient's nicotine patches for that.

I think your hubby is indeed in denial that he needs to quit.

BTW: violent temper tantrums are another problem all together- they are not acceptable from a grown man! If you EVER fear for your safty, pick up your baby and leave the house. Don't be afraid to call the cops- you and your baby deserve safty and happiness.

nicotine addiction?

nevertheless he can quit

he will be better after quitting

I find it hard to believe that any medical doctor would tell any of their patients to continue to smoke because of stress...I think your husband is overwhelmed with all the new responsibility in his life and is trying to hold on to what is normal to him.

Nicotine addition is a strong hold to break...Have him ask his doctor about a medicine called Chantix..it makes it much easier to quit. I have smoked 2 packs a day for 20 yrs and have been taking Chantix for 2 weeks and have not smoked for 7 days....

Good luck

He's lying to you.
No doctor in his right mind would tell a patient to continue smoking.

He's probably lying to you. It sounds like he has other serious issues. Keep yourself safe.

He spends long days in bed shivering, and he has scary temper tantrums that you want to avoid. It seems to me that he has problems besides smoking. What kind of doctor was it? Is he getting mental health care, or does he have a respiratory disease? You need to become educated about his health problems.
