What could a doctor do for me?!

Question: I'm going to the doctor tomorrow because of an ankle injury. I almost wonder if I shouldn't even bother because I'm not sure what they could do for me as I may be pregnant. I'll be 6dpo tomorrow, so it'd be too early to test if I'm pregnant. But they can't do an x-ray or prescribe anything if they can't find out for sure right? Should I cancel the appointment and save my money?

An x-ray of an ankle will expose your unborn baby to very little, if any, radiation. X-rays do not fly all willy nilly around a room. They are highly directed and concentrated beams of radiation which only expose the area of interest. And, on top of that fact, we will cover your uterus with a lead apron. If a doctor is concerned about an ankle fracture, an ankle x-ray would be fine for you.

The following website has questions answered by qualified medical personel, who are experts in radiation and it's effects. Here is a very similar question:

"QUESTION: I found out about four months ago that I was pregnant and I need an x ray on my ankle. Will the radiation affect the baby?

ANSWER: X rays of your ankle or foot, performed with modern technology, will deliver a negligible dose of radiation to your unborn baby. The dose will be too small to measure. It will be substantially less than the dose you (and every person) receive each day from natural environmental radiation.

Conclusion: There is no reason for concern regarding x rays of your ankle.

They can give you an x-ray of your foot. There's no way that would harm your baby in any way. Only abdominal x-rays are a problem if you are pregnant, and even then the risk of side-effects are low.

They might not be able to prescribe you certain things if you think you may be pregnant, but there are some drugs that have been widely tested and are safe for pregnant women.

Their blood pregnancy test may beable to tell that far out. Just be honest and they will help you out. Or call and ask before you go.

save your money, ICE packs. and wrap it. maybe some
asprin or the like for some pain. and stay off it.....

Go to the Doctor! There are ways to work around all of your concerns. kjl
