How to break the habit??!

Question: I'm trying to quit cigs at the mo. I drive a van for a livingwith short drives between each delivery and built up a habit of lighting up between shops, not smoking all the cig, usually putting it out b4 the next shop. It's at this time that I crave a cig, at home and out with the mrs shopping or having a pint I'm ok. I've tried replacing them with lollies but went through a bag of about 50 in two days. I have smoked in the van but not at home.(I'm on patches btw). Any advice.....please...all answers appreciated

I knew someone that cut drinking straws to the same length as their cigs. Whenever they wanted a smoke, they would just suck through the straw like a cig....it worked for her! It might help with the physical habit and oral fixation.

I'm going through the same thing. Here's what I'm trying to do, and so far, it's working. Everyday you pretty much smoke around the same time of day, or somewhat close to the same time every day. Try skipping the morning the cigarette. Not saying stop cold turkey, but do that for a few days. Then push that further the next few days to not having one until, say lunch time. Continue to ween the time you smoke down each few days. I was up to a half a pack daily, but now I'm having 3 a day. Next week is down to two. I'm feeling way better, and I'm excited to stop!
Also, try "pretending" to smoke. As in put the cigarette in your mouth, but DON'T light it, and pretend to smoke. A few "pretend" puffs calms me down, and I didn't even really smoke. Good luck my friend, and don't give up trying to quit!!

reduce it gradually and quit smoking

ya....start a new habit!

They have this new pill that cured my husband

I also heard that the gum works really good for those times when you are in the van...

i went to the doctors and was given champix havent smoked for 9 months i used to smoke 40 a day

ok, this is a medication but trust me,IT WORKS!!!! talk to your doctor about it. it's called Chantex and it's just a pill that you take. plez talk to your doc about it! IT TOTALLY WORKS!!!!

umm..first read the story called quitters inc...then , ...wait lemme tell u sumthing..smoking doesn't help you at all..all your doing is killing urself..if ur gunna smoke , might aswell go commit suicide , it's the same thing..and something u can do to stop is to be true to urslef..u can make a chart or suming , aand for every smoke , you can't have a smoke for the next day..and if u have to smokes in a day , then u can't smoke for two days ,....gradually u'll stop

Try toothpicks... :p

I have been on Chantix for 2 weeks and have not smoked in a week. This med is amazing. When I tried the patches I was so anxious and the cravings were horrible. With this pill I dont even crave a smoke. BTW I smoked over 20 yrs at 2 packs a day.

Good luck

my dad was a cigar man and now he quit smoking how did he do it? well he promised to us this! and then at first he bought one package of smoke and then he finished it after that he did not buy anymore instead he bought chocolates and gum instead of smoke, he said that their is this usual time that he crave for it my advice is go away from the place that you said you smoke and maybe that'll help

In the case of smoking, the chemical dependency is very hard to get rid of and often the original cause for the addiction was just because everyone else was smoking. Try non fattening things like water or popcorn and new habits like drumming on the wheel. I don't figure any answer will help much, it is mostly up to you to find the resolve to quit.

Good luck and God bless.

Think of the little fella in your picture.....it's for his benefit and
you'll both be healthier so they say.
Instead of lollies try Extra Strong Mints ...don't think you would be so tempted by eating them all the time.
Ahh ...me yes I smoke like a chimney but don't have family so in the end it's just me at risk.

Usually I would say, change your routine, because getting out of your cigg routine will help get you out of the habit.

You might want to go to your nearest pharmacy for one of those inhalers which are like a ciggarette but aren't, yet taste like it and feel like it so it gives your hand something to do. It might be your best substitute under the circumstances. You will need to speak to someone from the chemist, just to make sure you can use it with patches or if you need to use it without.

Also, gum might be better than lollies, and I know my gran likes the nicotine gum to help smokers quit.

Well done in wanting to quit, I'm sure it must be really difficult but it can be done. Fair play to you :)

Substitution is the wrong approach.
Whilst nowadays I smoke up to 60 a day and don't want to quit just yet (I give up when I want to, not when the government decides), I may just have to when they out price them.
I've smoked since I was 15, but gave up for over 4 years once, with ease, reading Allen Carrs "The Easy Way To Give Up Smoking" and I'd recommend it.
The only reason I started again, was because of my wife complaining I'd had too much to drink, and hid the booze, so I thought "**** you, I'll buy a packet of fags instead"

Once you've quit, never let your guard down.
Giving up needn't have withdrawal symptoms, and will make you feel really good about yourself - just approach it from a different angle.
Good luck.

Hello,
As you were trying to quit before, what drug did you use to replace the nicotine you were craving? Ok the patch. Was this patch strong enough for you?
Other then the lollie pops what did you use for the habit of something in your mouth and your anxiety?
There is usually a reason for people picking up the smoking habit. Anxiety is a huge one. Try getting on the happy pill if you truly want to stop tobacco.
You may want to get on some diet drug too, nicotine helps with the weight too. It is also steals water from your system so at least you wont have to deal with being dehydrated anymore.
Tomatoes and potatoes and some other foods contain nicotine in small amounts, maybe try eating more of these, fresh of course, might help?
You need to quit for you and no one else. It will not help if someone is adding stress for you to stop. Only time I stopped was when I was pregnant.
Good luck and remember those who said it was easy to stop were not smokers to begin with.

I started smoking when cigs were still .47 cents a pack, and I quit 4 years ago. The way I did it is simple and really inexpensive, I licked my thumbs and first two fingers and rubbed them in the bottom of my ashtray, HARD, and then let the ashes dry onto my fingers, then brushed them off, NOT WASHED; my reasoning for this is this; Because what you smell, you taste !, every time I would go to light a smoke, the fingers that I had put into the ashtray would go up near my nose and I would smell the ashtray, after a while the smokes would start tasting just like that ashtray and we all know that an ashtray smells like crap - terrible - horrible and all that and it took about a month before I had had enough and quit. Hope that this helps you out and the best of luck. The first three days are the hardest, thats when all the garbage from the cigs is starting to leave your body and lungs, once you get past those 1st 3 days, the rest will become easier and easier.

didnt you ever hear of ko-po the kick one pick one dog? haha its about breaking an old habit and starting a new one. it takes around 23 days to break a habit. it gets easier....
try eating oranges also, theres something in them that can reduce you wanting tobacco.

Hope i helped =)
