Exactly how does a laxative work?!

Question: I'm talking about Dulcolax. Says it causes bowel movement with 6-12 hours. You're supposed to take it overnight so you can wake up and crap.

My question is, is it only for going #1 or for both going #1 & #2.

Also, let's say it starts working in 6-7 hours. Will it wake me up because I have to go crap, or make me go to the bathroom several times? Or does it just gets my crap ready to go so it's ready. I mean how dramatic of an effect are we talking about here.

It makes your intestines squeeze and move things along. It also attracts water inside, so it's softer to push out. Only for "solids" LOL. Shouldn't be dramatic. It should just happen easier at some point the next day.

you have to be careful with laxatives, some of them cause extreme cramping and gas.i think the way they work is to get things moving in your large intestine by causing peristallis theyre sort of like waves that cause you to have the uge to move your bowelsit sually takes 6 or 7 hours,my advice is not to go to bed after you take a laxitive ,like you said you could wake up with the uncontrolable urge to poop, some of these laxitives work so good that you may not make it to the bathroom i time it kind of explodes.you may move your bowels about 3 or 4 times and a laxitive does not make you pee,if you do it ws because you had to pee.

Ducolax is a stool softener not a true laxative. Constipation causes the stool to stay in the lower large bowel where the moisture is absorbed into the bowel making the stool hard and uncomfortable to pass. Ducolax keeps the bowel from absorbing that moisture thus keeping the stool softer for a more comfortable bathroom experience. Very non-dramatic.

Dulcolax IS a stimulant-irritant laxative, not a mere stool softener. (Look up the ingredient, bisacodyl, if you don't believe me).
I don't use it personally because apart from the stomach pain risk it will definitely cause you to "s hit chilli sauce" two or three times.
