What is the tendon-like "structure" on the side/back of the knee?!


Question: If you bend your knee at about a 135 degree angle (more stretched out then bent), there is a tendon or cord-like thing that is on the side and near the back of your knee (on the outside). It kind of sticks out. What is this? It has been hurting really bad when i have been running, and i have no clue what it is. I will just go to my trainer monday to find out but i kinda want to know now. thanks in advance, and sorry i can't explain it better

Sounds like you are speaking of the biceps femoris, which is the largest of the 3 hamstring muscles. You likely have tendinitis there or if the pain is more on the side than the back you could have IT band syndrome. Tendinitis is often best treated with rest, ice, anti-inflammatories and some light stretching. IT (iliotibial) band syndrome will often come from weakness in the hip/glut musculature (often the gluteus medius). You would likely benefit from a visit to a physical therapist--they could also offer advice on running and shoewear to assist with future prevention. Good luck.

under the knee... or above the knee? i'm not a professional yet, but it sounds like you pulled it while running. rest and ice should help.

That is your hamstring tendon. Rest it till you can see your trainer. Take ibuprofen for the pain and ice it if you need to.
