Just a little over a year ago I suddenly had a black toenail, meaning I had bumped it really badly.
The doctor offered to remove the nail, but since it was not hurting badly I decided against it. Only when I put pressure on the nail with certain shoes, or hit my toe against the leg of a chair it would hurt. But mostly I was pain free.
And now the answer to your question:
My toe is not fully grown to its original size yet, but with the next clean up I'm sure the last black piece will be cut off. So it took me more then a year. I hope this answers your question and I hope it is not hurting too much. Soaking in warm salty water will help with the pressure. Polish with red nail polish and nobody will know during the summer.

my drawer fell on mine and it was badly broken
its still sad looking hehe but its grown back and its only been a week
Broke my big toe & nail injured badly. It's taken over 1 year to fully grow back without bruising being visible.
