Do cigarette filters really work?!

Question: I don't smoke, I'm just curious, but i hear they filter out the tar and nicotine to help you quit. is this true and how does it all work.

They have an effect, but I am not sure if it could be called 'working'. But you do only have to look at at a used filter to see that it has captured some debris. It is unclear if what is removed is signficant.

But

The incidence of cancer of the throat was higher than lung cancer before filters were introduced. On introduction of the filter cancer of the lung increased in incidence and throat cancer reduced.

With a filter people draw the smoke further down into the lung rather than holding it at the throat.

nope, your far better of to just avoid smoking altogether, over all it doesn't make much difference, you still get the effects of smoking weather you smoke with or without a filter.
