In Goldeneye, James Bond is about to get cut in half by a laser...?!

Question: How far up his body would it have to go before he died??

For a reminder of the scene it is Sean Connery playing Bond and
And the famous quote from the scene is:
"You expect me to talk, don't you!?!"
"No Mr Bond, I expect you to die!!!"

Running up his middle, it would probably have reached his inferior vena cava and abdominal aorta at the same time. The theory of it cauterising would only be relevant where it cut a blood vessel with a smaller diameter than it's beam or crossed perpendicular to a larger one (cauterising both sides of the cut). In the case of these two major vessels, it would cut along the length of them and blood loss would be massive and almost total causing extremely quick death.

The pain felt by the cut could well render the victim unconscious though - any damage done to the lower tails of the spinal cord would only affect lower limbs and neurogenic shock would be pretty unlikely.

Of course the point above about the laser not existing is fair although normal rules never did apply to James Bond. It really is science fiction in a contemporary setting.

If I saw that thing coming toward my nuts I'd be dead of fright before it even touched me

Not far in, until blood-loss would have killed him.

peirce brosnan played bond in goldeneye your thinking of goldfinger

id say about 20 odd seconds before he would bleed to death do to cutting the femoral archery........unless the laser cauterised the cut????????? as the laser was going slow he would probably be dead befor it hit his navel

yes ive watched the film hundreds of times bond says "i no what you no " such as "operation grand slam" two words tou may have heard mr bond ? but can you afford to take that risk? 008 will replace me ! yes mr bond your worth more to me alive ! stop!
.
i think in reality the laser would kill anyone once it had reached the abdomen

It would sever his spinal column, and render him paralyzed. Eventually he would die from tramatic nerve injury. That sucks!

The laser portrayed in that film would not be powerful enough for the light to pass through the skin. You need a very low frequency, high powered laser to go through tissue and industrial ones of that era could not. Modern surgical ones can but only to a depth of about 1.5 mm so would only cause pain and superficial bleeding which would stop after about 15 mins.

could not be quick or painless enough the sooner the better
