Overweight and ACL (knee)??!

Question: my sister, has been having problems with her knee lately. she showed me where the pain is at on the outside of her left knee cap. Seems like where the knee meets the calf on the side. It stiffens up at night and she has trouble lifting her leg straight out (it will make a slight popping sound) and there is aching when she try standing up from a sitting position. I looked on the net and found that maybe it's her ACL (but I dunno) based on her pain placement. She is over weight, I would say about 100lbs. Could that be causing ACL problems? I thought that's a sports injury? I'm on Y! Answers so I thought i'd ask. Thanks!

yes, being overweight can cause ACL tear. the weight causes tension on the knees as it might be too much for the knees to support it. yup, ACL is a sports injury and i've had a couple of teammates who had theirs torn. The PT's said that one of the causes for the ACL to tear is being over weight. from my teammates' stories, they heard a sound like knuckles popping when they injured their knee... i think this is the sound of the ligament tearing. but i'm pretty sure anyone can get it. some get theirs torn just by missing a step while walking or tripping or landing in an awkward way. it's best to consult a physical therapist to make sure as the injury might get worse if she doesn't do anything about it =)

ACL injuries usually have symptoms of instability of the knee, i.e. feeling as if the knee is giving way. She could have any number of problems with the knee to include meniscal injury or even arthritis. Its hard to tell based on the information you have provided but with popping of the knee it could possibly be her mensicus. See an orthopedic surgeon for a more definitive answer.

ACL is the back of the knee. Your talking about the LCL (lcl is the front left) . she most likely sprained it, if she had tore it she would be screaming in pain. the popping sound is just her cardilage letting pockets of air out
