I've been taking Ibuprofen for over a year now.....?!

Question: I broke my leg in Oct. 2006...I had to have a metal rod put in it...it still hurts to this day..I have been taking Ibuprofen for over a year now since they cut me off of the vicoden, which is fine, but all of the sudden I am having black stools, and my stomach hurts....I know this is a side effect from taking the Ibuprofen for so long, but can anyone tell me if this is something serious? and what is it that makes the stool black?

You are taking a way to high dose.

Black stools can be a sign of gastric bleeding....a side affect of taking non-steroidal anti-inflamatories.

Please see your doctor ASAP. Very important!

EDIT: If you cannot see your doctor try making sure that you eat before taking the brufen as this will help to reduce any damage being done to the GI tract. Also try cutting down the dosage...recommended is usually 400mg every 6 hours.

But please see doctor if poss as you may require some medication to further protect and heal if gastric ulcer has formed...

So sorry I cant help more

THE BLACK STOOL SOUNDS LIKE EITHER IRON OR OLD BLOOD WHICH THAT COULD VERY WELL BE SINCE YOU ARE TAKING SO MUCH OF THE IBUPROFEN.

I UNDERSTAND CHRONIC PAIN. HAVE YOU WENT BACK TO THE DOCTOR ABOUT THIS EXCESSIVE PAIN? MAYBE YOU COULD TRY ALEVE AS IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE PLATEAUED WITH THE IBU.

BEST THING OF COURSE IS HAVE YOUR DOCTOR TO CHECK TO SEE IF THIS IS BLOOD IN THE STOOL.

its very serious , it sounds like you have developed a stomach ulcer , you should go to you doctor , the black is dried blood , and should be taken seriously , i had one and it made me very ill , and you should stop taking ibprofen its actualy wearing away the linning of your stomach

i am also a army med tech so if you have more question feel free to ask

The color can come from either too high of iron (unlikely) or the presence of blood (very likely). You could have gastrointestinal bleeding, and should see your doctor right away.

There are other painkiller options out there, but you have to insist that you need help and be open to possibilities besides just drugs. If your doctor knows that you're not just another addict, that you really do have chronic pain and are willing to try acupuncture, hypnosis, whatever, in order to address the pain, then he or she will take you more seriously. Be aware that there are LOTS of people out there who have painkiller addictions, and they are constantly whining and crying to their doctors for more and more prescriptions. That makes the doctors wary of writing yet another script. Work with your doctor...there may be another problem aggravating the situation, there could be a problem with the rod inserted in your leg, it shouldn't be causing this much pain after so much time has passed. Make your situation clear to your physician, I'm sure he or she wants you to be free of pain.

Best of luck to you, I hope you find a solution that works.
