Ankle strengthening?!


Question: Hi,

My ankles are very weak, this is due to months of playing 2 (sometimes 3) competitive football (soccer) matches per week, and it can often lead to a lot of pain during and after games. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to help strengthen them without stopping playing.

Hi Louis
Absolutely, there is lots you can do to strengthen your ankles. Do you have a history of ankle sprains at all?

If you want to strengthen the muscles around your ankle, you can start with toe raises-->that will strengthen your calves.

Then you can do the opposite of that, stay on your heals and lift your toes up. That will strengthen the dorsi flexors of your ankle, namely tibialis anterior.

You can also try inverting and everting against a wall (the wall acts as your resistance), or get a theraband and use that as resistance.
