Hi I'm a receptionist as well, I get the same problem, I went for a massage last week and it was terrific. And I do try and walk around more than I use to and stretch a bit and move my head from side to side and around to try and stretch the neck a bit, it helps but the massage was the best for me and I will try to have one every 2 weeks or so.
Some people don't understand how hard are job is and especially when we need to go to the loo and no one is available to do the phones! Good luck with your neck..cheers

You may need to lower your monitor. If you have to tilt your head back slightly to see the monitor, then it is too high and your neck will let you know it. My neck hurt for months. Either lower the monitor or raise the chair. Hope this helps.

First, adjust the level of your monitor so you aren't leaning too far up or down to see it.

Second, practice good posture (hard to do, I know -- I'm in the same boat as you).

Third, take a few minutes every hour to stand up, move around, take a break or just do a different task to break up the monotony of constantly sitting in the same position.

Try gently rotating your head slowly; do shoulder-circles; and try locking your hands together over your head (sitting or standing) and reach as high as you can in a long gentle stretch.

For an incredible treat, go get a massage and let the therapist concentrate on your neck, back and shoulders.

First the monitor needs to be at eye level. When you feel those back neck muscles began to tighten, stop whatever you are doing, take the thumb and index finger on both hands, and grab the skin above and below the eyebrow, end nearest your nose, and squeeze, or you could say squeeze the eyebrow and hold until a slow count of seven is reached. Let go and move to the middle of the eyebrow and repeat, then to the far end and repeat. This will loosen the tightness. You can do this two times or three throughout the day. To many times may give you a headache. You could also bring with you a gel pack that you place in the freezer, and when cold, just lay it on the back of the neck. Most work places today have a small refrigerator. When you get home, try moist warm heat of a towel soak in hot water, then squeeze it out. Place the hot towel on the back of the neck. Do this a few times and you should feel really good and relaxed. Good luck to you young lady.

you need a good chair or cushion in chair.
you also need the head piece for answering phone instead of the regular cradle, so you don't bend head the same way all the time.
try standing from time to time with head piece instead of sitting all day.
also switching computer to other side of desk helps from time to time
