Well
The muscle along the thigh, which is called the Uastus Lateralis m. It's the main muscle of your thigh, and is the muscle that is most commonly pulled.

A lot of athletes make the mistake of not knowing how to properaly stretch it before and after an activity. If you are unaware of how properaly to stretch it, go visit a physio therapy for a day and learn some stretching. Because trust me it will help you so much in the future!

Also now that you do have a strained muscle you should be stretching double the amount, to help it heal. But not too hard that you damage it worse. Just get plenty of rest, and you can apply heat along with the ice. And btw your muscle doesn't "bleed" when it's pulled.. hhaha.

Happy Healing!

apply a heating pad to it and rub the hell out of it, when you pull a mussel you actually tear the mussel and it bleeds in side, then you have long lasting pain cause there is blood in there that isn't going away, and if it stays there you will get like a tendentious, from the old blood developing Bactria in it, So if you heat it up and rub it out the old blood will dissolve back in the body, and you'll be good to go, But at first to apply ice right after the injury you where right in doing that, then after 24 hrs you need heat and rubbing.

Read and apply http://www.helium.com/tm/148271 to fix the problem.
If it hurts that much do not make it worse by running.

The best thing to do generally is rest it.
