Armpit numbness?!

Question: First of all, this isn't necessarily for me but it is a problem that my girlfriend has. Also, this is a repost from a couple of days ago since I only got a couple of responses.

She's 4'11", 19 years old, Caucasian.

About 4 days ago, she had informed me that her left armpit was numb for the last three days prior to that. Not entirely sure what the problem was, I told her to go see a doctor. However, she doesn't have insurance so she went to those crappy clinics.

As expected, they had no idea what it was, gave her some cream and said if it persisted for another week then to come back.

She hasn't been hit or anything near that region, as far as she knows.

.. and as far as physical activity, she has modern dance, jazz and ballet classes at the community college she goes to.

Right now, she is out of town visiting her sister in Maryland so I decided to see if anyone knew what the problem was. When she comes back, I'm going to get her to go to a real doctor. Has anyone had this before?

I am wondering if it is superficial numbness or deep tissue? Numbness in an area indicates some sort of neuro interference or involvement. And/or sensory deficit.

It's difficult to diagnosis here since it's difficult to tell if another area is involved. If this radiates anywhere? If there is any swelling involved? Redness of the skin? Any swelling of lymph nodes in the area? Any fevers? etc.

I suspect it may be due to her deodorant. I would simply suggest she try changing deodorants, such as Mitchum Unscented Clear Gel. Something without perfume.

Hope this helps. Take care my friend.

She could have pinched a nerve, or she could have injured a nerve in her armpit. It would definately cause numbness. I wouldn't freak out just yet. Give it a week or so to heal and see if the feeling starts to come back. If it doesn't then I would see the doc. It doesn't sound life threatening so give it a little more time.
