I have a tube of CORACAINE which is 16% benzocaine and very handy for topical anesthesia.
I'm not sure what the 4gram tube costs but you can get one free from your denturist or dentist. Your pharmacist might not want to give it over the counter as they are very fussy now-a-days with any strong anelgesic.
Sorry about your toe. Ingrown toenails are so easy to prevent by poking a bit of cotton batting under the upper corner. The flesh below will soon heal and you can poke more cotton under and then allow the nail to grow OVER the cotton.
The curved corner of the nail that is causing all the pain can then be trimmed off carefuuly. Apply polysporin to the are to prevent infection.
smack it with a hammer,and when it starts to bleed,pour rubbing alcohol on it.
Go to a doctor and he will numb and treat it, why play around with your health!
Use ice. Please sterilze all your tools!! And put an antiseptic on afterward. If ice doesn't work, try pressure.
I had an ingrown toenail that I "operated" on for a year and when I finally went to the doctor he said it was so far in there and high up (because I kept cutting pieces out) that I would have never gotten it out. BUT since you dont want to go to the doctor this is what I used to do....
1. soak foot in hot water/epsom salt
2. hold piece of ice on area for 5 whole minutes
3. hand boyfriend a flashlight so that I could see really well
4. use angled cuticle clipper like this http://www.lacross.com/productdetails.cf... and clipped up as far as I could then used tweezers to pull the nail out.

dude i did it with a razorblade and cut stright down the middle of the nail and used sewing needle to clear hangig skin under nail holdin on to nail clear all the way to ingrow it all ready hurts but you got to clear it and use needle to clean side alot of line store up is there dude you should be able to pull it up probly a little bit then get some good small set of needle nose pliers and push it down kinda hard under nail and grip semi hard to lossein it up then go for it it will be a big hole but it feels so much better afterwards alot of blood thats ok just wash it in tub an squeez it with paper towels hope this helps you out man i know what your going threw
i get ingrown toenails all the time and they hurt like hell when you pull 'em. i found that a good dose of jack daniels taken orally does the trick.
