Problem with my first massage?!

Question: I had my first massage on Saturday and ever since I have had severe pain under my right shoulder blade and on the muscle above my collar bone (traps or deltoids i don't remember what it's called.) Is something wrong or is this supposed to happen? My back didn't hurt at all before I went (I had a gift certificate so I had to go) and now I'm in pain. What should I do?

i agree with the other 2 answers but i would drink lots of water. whenever you have a message you should drink tons of water, bc toxins are released and can cause pain... also take and advil or something. good luck

Did you experience any discomfort during the massage? If so, did you tell your massage therapist? Massages (unless being performed aggressively as part of physical or sports therapy) should NOT hurt, and unless you speak up, sometimes we have no way of knowing that we're causing you pain. Some people are very good at hiding nonverbal cues to pain (curling toes, flinching, tensing), so it's important to voice your discomfort.

If you experienced pain during the massage, and DID voice your concerns, and the massage therapist did not adjust his/her pressure and/or tempo, then shame on the MT...if I were you, I'd phone up the MT and give him/her an earful. If nothing else, your reaction to massage needs to be properly recorded on your client file.

You also may want to go to your physician to make sure you weren't injured.

What did you do after the massage? Sometimes when your muscles are looser you think you feel stronger and try to do more or do something different than you are used to doing.

Was the massage painful or too deep? Sometimes you can have residual pain from deep tissue which is normal. Just go ice and stretch.

Call your massage therapist if you are more concerned than that.
