Has anyone ever stopped taking Oxycontin?!

Question: I have taken this medication for 5 years now due to a broken back,I still have horrible pain, but find I cant think anymore,I am easily distracted and I dont feel well alot of the time.I am considering changing medication,or getting off meds completely,in which case I will undoubtedly become unemployed and unemployable,I have no insurance so I take these drugs so I can work after being denied disability.I could not wait to appeal the decision as I was about to become homeless.I would like to stop taking this drug, but know that it will be miserable, based on the time I ran out for 2 days and became very very ill.If youve gone through this please share your experience with me so I can make this decision more easily and know exactly what to expect.

If you are taking this medication under a physician's care (which is how it should be taken) then tell your health care professional to wean you off the medication. If you are not taking this under a physician's care, then please be careful as withdrawal can be very uncomfortable to say the least and also very dangerous...you can even die from withdrawal off narcotic pain medication. There are other options...one of them being methadone which helps with pain control and is less addicting (it is used to get people off of substances like cocaine and heroin). I have been through taking oxycontin for years and then coming off of it. I was given Fentynal patches called Dermagesic. Coming off of them was worse than coming off the oxycontin. I suggest you ask your physician for something less potent like hydrocodeine instead of oxycodeine (which is what oxycontin is). If you aren't going through a physicain then look for methadone clinics in your area. They can wean you off the oxycontin and the methadone will relieve the pain. I would also contact a lawyer concerning the Social Security (they always denie you the first time, by the way). It usually takes a lawyer to get your case approved. By the way...the anxiety and nervousness you suffer as a result of your back injury will get you approved under the Social Security System a lot sooner than a back injury. Reason being...people can see a physical disability and aren't usually intimidated by this, but a mental disability can't be seen and is more intimidating to people so it's easier to get approved using this angle. A good social security lawyer knows this and uses this to help get your case approved.

I don't believe you can just stop taking oxycontin! It is a serious med. and I am sure you will go thru horrific withdrawals! See your Dr. before trying to go without it...may even cause death...

Hey man you should NOT just stop taking it! If you've been takin this for five years you have an actual phyical addication. Really you should go to your dr. and they will wean you off of them gradually. If you can't afford to do this though you can do it yourself, if you take 3 pills now, take 2.5 tomarrow and so on, gradually! Your going to feel uncomforable and sick but you shouldn't just stop it can actually cause very serious problems even death. Good luck.

chronic use of oxy and other barbiturates can actually cause the feelings of pain in the body. Once i stopped taking them i found that with physical therapy, yoga, massages, and time the pain went away naturally. The withdrawls will be hard but possible just make sure to stay hydrated since you will have things coming out of both ends even if you tapper off. I drank a lot of water and green tea to try an flush my system out at the last week of minimal dosage. Best of luck to you!

I wasnt taking oxy's but Hydrocodone, I had to go to rehab 2 times. A doctor gave it to me for TMJ and torn rotator cuff, I unfortunatly got hooked on them. I quit cold turkey and that sucks really bad.
The seats and chills and body aches.
Ask your doctor to put you on a non narcotic pain pill. Mine put me on Tramodol. It works for the pain very well.
I wish you a ton of luck! I think its great that you want to quit. It is a very hard thing to do.
Take Care!
