How painful is...??!

Question: So I have to get mine removed on Tuesday and was wondering.. has anyone else been completely put to sleep through IV sedation?? If so, how long did you sleep after the procedure. Did you have any side effects from the IV sedation? What did the use in the IV to sedate you?

Also how painful was it afterwards and what did they send you home with for pain killers??

Thanks.. any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Every individual has his/her "own" chemistry so this means, it all depends on: how many are being extracted, and are they impacted (deep in the socket)? How long each tooth takes to extract depends on impaction. If they are sedating you with I.V., then your wisdom teeth/tooth might be impacted.

If this your first time sedation you may not know until it happens (don't worry highly trained Anaesthesiologist will be there), but you might want ask anyone in your family..mom,dad,sibs....have they ever had sedation for surgery? And did they have any type of reaction during or after surgery with anaesthesia.....

When patients call back to get in right away due to "moderate to severe" side effects. Some physicians will ask the patient if anyone in your immediate family has had a major reaction after taking meds orally (by mouth, intramuscular (in the muscle(IM), intravenously-put to sleep(IV), general Anastasia (local site) not put to sleep.

So the answer to your question is..everyone is different and no you usually do not even remember falling asleep and wake up very groggy like "it's over already, it's done in the recovery area...hope this helps...good luck

They are removing what???

First I HATE the dentist and my widsom teeth were the easiest thing I have ever had done! I wasn't 100% sedated, I did wake up breifly a few times during the procedure although I don't remember much of it or I couldn't feel any pain. I just got vicodine and I don't think I really took it and I don't have a high pain tolerance. I slept and rested for the day. I also slept with peas/ice on my cheecks and no chipmunk cheeks for me! I was out and about shopping the following day. I kept up on my fluids, dry pockets are no fun. I didn't experience any of that, but I hear that can be brutal. Little swollen on the inside of my mouth but other than that it was the easiest surgery I have had. Good Luck!!!

i was sedated for my wisdom teeth and it was so simple. i went to sleep easy, and woke up easily too. i got pain meds but only needed a few. good luck.

First, it is conscious sedation---while you may be in a twilight sleep, you will be arousable and may be able to hear everything. The medications that are typicaly used are midazolam and fentanyl---one is for pain and the other is for sedation. Most people are fully awake in about 30 minutes after the last dose, though they still cannot drive and shouldn't be alone. Some people can't remember anything, and others remember everything.

I wasn't sedated all the way when I got mine removed. I got 2 shots of Novocaine and the gas. It was actually pretty simple and really all you feel is pressure. It doesn't feel like they're yanking something out, it feels more like they're just pushing on your tooth.
Yes, my dentist sent me home with plenty of pain killers. It really wasn't bad enough for me to need that many though.
