There have been some good answers so far. The first visit will mostly be a day for evaluation and knowing how your neck pain affects your day to day function. There will be a lot of measuring and testing. Sometimes the first day hurts for that reason, but please know that that is not the goal of PT. The goal is to make you feel better, be able to complete your daily tasks better and for you to be independent in your own self management.

That being said, most therapists are shying away from passive treatments such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation...mostly because the research shows they just don't work. However, the real reason is that those things won't be there for you once you go home. Therefore, the focus is on showing you how to manage and actually improve your condition and not just cover it up with fancy electronic gizmos. However, they do still have a limited purpose and might be appropriate in certain cases. You will most likely be sent home with some type of advice or exercise to do from the first visit.

Best of luck for a speedy recovery. healing is not just a matter of chance, it's a matter of providing the patient with the right opportunity.

After a diagnosis has been made, your physical therapist may choose from a range of treatment options, including exercises for flexibility, strength, stability, and restoration of range of motion. Other options include ice, heat, electrical stimulation, traction or mobilization, and massage. Your physical therapist may also analyze your home and work environment in order to ensure that you're not re-injuring yourself.
