Do Cortisone shots for knee pain, last for months or just weeks?!

Question: My husband has just received Cortisone shots in one knee.
He has been walking without pain for the first time, except for climbing a long set of stairs, two days ago. Does the Cortisone just work for some of the time, or should he have been pain free when climbing those particular stairs.

Since that time, there has been no pain, except for a twinge very rarely.

Anybody had any experience on this. Also, has anybody had knee surgery, which the Doctor states could be an option if the Cortisone doesn't work for a long period of time.

Maureen - I think it depends on the individual. I had it put in my shoulder for chronic bursitis. It lasted for a while, but the pain came back again. Finally, a chiropractor manipulated the shoulder and all's well now! CJ

they shot that stuff in my shoulder. that lasted about 1.5 months.

I get cotisone injections in my knees pretty often, but not sooner than 3 months. They do offer some relief for most of that time, sometimes longer. They do not get rid of all the pain for me. I have had arthroscopic surgery 3 times which helps for a longer time. This is where they go in and scrape the cartilage to smooth it out so the knee cap operates more smoothly. One knee had to have a ligament notched to allow it to stretch. One side effect of the steroids is a rash and "Thrush mouth" which is a yeast infection. The tongue gets a thick fur and food has no taste. Good luck!

This depends on the person. My Grandma got these and they lasted for about 6 months and she still didn't have the pain she previously had. On the other hand, my dad had them and they lasted a few weeks.
I hope they last for your Hus like they did for my Grandma.

Got it in my shoulder and it lasted around 3 months it was great. The pain was so bad that it would wake me up at night.

only had the shots in the knuckles of my fingers, only lasted a few days at a time. Ended up having to have the straps that hold the muscles to the fingers cut anyways, as i ended up with what's called "trigger fingers". It's when the fingers lock up in a trigger position.
