It is common for doctors to say "there's nothing wrong" "it's all in your head" or "you're fine" when they have no clue what's causing your pain. It is usually a way to defend themselves, but I think they rather should admit that they just don't know what's causing the pain, and send you to someone with more experience on knee injuries. There are always a reason behind pain, it don't always have to be serious, but it is important to find out what's causing it, to get free from the injury. The easy explanation would be that you're suffering from growing pain. However, that pain doesn't occur just because you're growing, it occurs because something is not as it should be, and growing is the factor that releases the pain. Since you're 17 now, and have had knee pains for as long as you can remember, I wouldn't think growing is what's causing the pain. It might be too tight muscles around your knee, and at your hip and quadriceps, but this usually refers to knee pain behind or/and at the inner side of the knee. Bone problems may also be another reason, though this is more likely to occur when you get older. There are also several injuries connected to patella pain, but those injuries usually don't affect your muscles.

I think you should make an appointment with someone that have knowledge and experience in treating sports or knee injuries/pain. If they're still not sure what's causing the pain, they will most likely look at how you stand, walk and run, to see if there are any unusual movements. He/she should also look at your foot and knees, to see if they bend too much inwards or outwards and check how your foot strikes the ground when you walk. If there are anything "wrong" here, this will cause increased pressure on your bones and muscles, making you more likely to get injured. Insoles in your shoes, especially made for you, will help you correct that.

X-ray or MRI (usually advised) should be taken if you still have no clue what's causing the pain after some visits. It is however not sure that these pictures show anything, and then it may be necessarily with an arthroscopic surgery. An arthroscopic surgery, is also used as a tool to diagnose, as well as repairing what's injured. It's a small surgery, where they send a small camera into your knee, to check how things are.

I hope you get to a doctor/specialist that can solve what's causing your pain, good luck:)

go back to the doctors and really lay it on the line don't take no nonsense

I have the same problem and i'm walking around 8 hours a day in work on average, I just grit my teeth and get on with it, you should too.

In the famous words of Mr T "quit your jibber jabber! You ain't hurt! You pathetic!"

see a diferent g.p. and aske for a second opinion from a specialist at your local hospital

don't just grit your teeth and take it that's retarded!!! i would set up another appointment with a different doctor maybe even a specialist and seriously don't let them tell you that nothing is wrong cause that's not right.... good luck in the mean time get some theragesic cream and put it on there when it first starts to hurt don't let it get severe before you put it on other wise it's worthless

If it's stress, diet or life style it will take a major effort to discover the cause and change. I doubt it's genetic.

You are right it's not normal, the human body does not generate pain signals without there being a problem.
