I hurt my knee while walking in New York. What could be the problem and what can!

Question: For the first two days of my vacation in New York, I did a lot of walking. Yesterday while I was at the museum, I noticed that my knee felt sore, but not enough to cause a limp. When I went to bed, I assumed it would feel better in the morning. But when I woke up, I discovered that my knee hurt even more. It hurts to bend it or even move it a little to get out of bed. Oddly enough, it hurts less to hobble around the hotel room... it's just getting out of the bed without lifting my leg and moving it that gets me. What could be the problem and what should I do to make it better? This is my last day to go shopping in New York considering that tomorrow is Easter Sunday and nothing is open. (Btw, I am 16 years old, 5'3" and 125 lbs. and do aerobics 20 minutes everyday.)

Maybe rest will help, or not pushing things too much. I get sore ankles after walking around in the city for a day or two - think it is about the bard concrete surfaces not just the amount of walking. Have not had problems with a knee before though. If you are keen to shop, maybe you could get a little trolley pusher (like old ladies have) or use a wheelie suitcase, if you have one, to help transport your shopping around. I would get your knee seen to soon, in case it is more than just a strain sort of injury. Maybe your knee could be strapped or one of those compression elastic bandage all-in-ones/brace sort of thing from a chemist/pharmacy could help you today. Good luck, hope you have a good day. Maybe you can do some other things as well as shopping, that require less walking, or you can shop in arcades with carpet and walk less and slower.

You probably have some water on the knee, especially if it's swollen, other than that, you've gotten a chip of arithritis that is irritated, best thing to do, is rub some WD-40, Rub the knee and around the knee, this will alleviate symptoms, When you get home, see and orthopedist. Best Wishes

It sounds like it's ok enough to wait till Monday to see a doctor, if no clinics are open today or tomorrow, but at your first opportunity you should have a doctor look at it. Until then you could try putting ice on it, or BenGay, or take some ibuprofen. I realize you'll be doing a lot of walking in NYC but try not to push yourself too fast or cause too much additional strain.
